Marriages Today
Looking at the state of many marriages today, marriage and communication have little to do with one another. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that fifty percent of all first marriages fail, and sixty percent of second marriages fail (only with children). First marriages are often called “practice marriages.” How did we get here? Most of us grew up learning the traditional “Three Rs of Reading, ‘Riting, and ‘Rithmetic.” However, we’ve neglected instructing our children on a critical fourth R: relationship and communication. Young adults graduate and enter our national workforce without the communication and relationship skills to succeed. Although they might be able to read and write their intended expression, their capacities to communicate, connect, collaborate, and cooperate are woefully undeveloped. We might reasonably ask ourselves, “Of what use are Reading, ‘Riting, and ‘Rithmetic if we cannot communicate effectively and get along with one another?”

Six Keys for Successful Communication
“Yes, and” opens up lines of communication reliably and encourages us to communicate.
“And” leaves us connected and prompts us to continue communicating.
“It seems to me” invites us to discuss something that may seem true. By speaking seemingly, we avoid getting bogged down debating conflicting truths.
“Tends to” helps us avoid speaking words like “always, never, every, and only,” which tend to interrupt our partner’s listening and the success of our communication.
“Thank you” is our invitation to connect, acknowledge, appreciate, be appreciated, and experience love and gratitude.
“I apologize” allows us to restore a broken connection and sets us on a path toward forgiveness and restoring trust.
